I am a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Sydney (UWS), working in the School of Medicine. My research unit is the Science of Mental Health and Adversity (SCIMHA) and we are interested in population mental health and response to disaster and threat (e.g. working with NSW Health Biopreparedness Unit on planning and response for pandemic influenza, and working with various government departments and emergency service groups looking at response and recovery to terrorism and natural disasters).
I am currently running an online research survey on the Human Impacts of Equine Influenza which is being funded by UWS. I'm not sure if you may already aware of this research project. The focus of this research is on the current and potential future effects of EI on people's social and emotional well-being, and mental health, and I am also looking at the impacts that biosecurity measures have had on people, in this regard.
Information that can be collected now will aid our understanding of the current situation and longer term planning for recovery from that, and also we have the opportunity to collect additional information that can provide key input for response planning to other national threats - such as SARS or pandemic influenza in the general population. Quarantine, social distancing, increased hygiene requirements, loss of control, and fear and uncertainty, are all aspects that EI has had in common with these other threats.
This research study has received the support of the Australian Harness Racing Council, the Australian Horse Industry Council, the Equestrian Federation of Australia, and the Equine Veterinarians Australia - these groups have either forwarded the survey link to their members or have posted a link on their websites, inviting their members to participate.
I have received responses from more than 2700 people so far.
To date, though, there has been no opportunity for me to access those working in the racing industry in Australia. I would really like to extend the reach of this research to include people from the racing industry, so the data I collect can be truly representative of the Australian horse industry.

I need to stress that is a research survey project - with no political, lobbying, or sales/marketing agenda. It has been internally funded by UWS, as our local communities in Western Sydney have been at the heart of the outbreak (in the Purple Zone) from the outset. The survey includes key situation information and data measures used in population health research and resilience research. The survey takes 20-30 minutes to complete.
